When a small business outgrows the $300 inkjet from Costco, the next printer isn't obvious. Buy a desktop laser? Lease a big-floor MFP? Sign up for managed print? The wrong call costs thousands. The right call quietly pays for itself for half a decade.

For most small businesses — 5 to 50 employees, a few thousand pages a month, color needed but not constantly — the answer is almost always the same machine. The Xerox VersaLink C7100 series (which includes the C7120, C7130, and C7150).
1. The 300,000-page math changes everything
Most small businesses print between 2,000 and 8,000 pages a month. That's 24,000 to 96,000 pages a year. The VersaLink C7100 is rated for 300,000 pages over its life — meaning a typical office will run one for 3 to 12 years before the duty cycle even becomes a concern.
Compare that to the cheap desktop lasers most small businesses start with. They print fine for 18 months, then the drum dies and a replacement costs half what a new machine costs. Or they jam. Or the toner gets expensive. Or they were never designed to do 5,000 pages a month and start showing it.
The C7100 is engineered for the workload. Drum, fuser, paper path — all rated for the long haul. When you spread $4,000 to $6,000 across 300,000 pages, your real cost is roughly 1.5 to 2 cents per page in hardware, before toner.
2. Color when you need it, fast when you don't
Small businesses don't print constant color — but they print it. Proposals with charts. Marketing handouts. Client-facing reports. The C7100 series runs 20 to 50 pages per minute depending on the model (C7120, C7130, C7150) in both color and black-and-white, with a 10-inch tablet-style touchscreen that any employee can use without training.
What that means in practice: your office assistant can walk up, tap "Scan to Email," drop a 30-page contract on the glass, and have it in three partners' inboxes before the coffee's poured. That used to be a workflow. Now it's a button.
3. Lease math: under $300/month, fully serviced
An average brand-new VersaLink C7100 lease runs ~$125/month on a 60-month lease, or $250–$350/month on a 36-month lease, depending on configuration, speed (C7120/C7130/C7150), and finishing options. All-in service is included:
- The machine itself
- All toner and consumables (no surprise supply bills)

Try pricing that against what your office currently spends on desktop printers, toner cartridges, and IT time. 4. What it's not great at

- It can't print 12x18 (SRA3). The C7100 series handles letter, legal, and tabloid (11x17) — but not the 12x18 sheet size some marketing and design shops need. If you regularly print on 12x18, step up to the AltaLink C8200 series.
- It tops out at 50 ppm. If you're a print shop running 50,000 pages a day, you're looking at production equipment in a different category. The C7100 is a workhorse office MFP, not a press.
- It's not for tiny offices. If you're a 2-person shop printing 200 pages a month, the C7100 is overkill. A desktop laser + a scan-to-email subscription makes more sense. We'll tell you that.
5. When to upgrade to the AltaLink instead
You should skip the C7100 and go straight to the Xerox AltaLink C8200 if any of these are true:
- You need 12x18 (SRA3) sheet size
- You print more than 15,000 pages a month
- You regularly print on 12x18 paper
- You have an IT department with compliance requirements (HIPAA, SOX, CJIS) — the AltaLink's security stack is heavier
- You need finishing options like stapling, hole-punching, or tri-fold brochures built in
If none of those apply — and for most small businesses, none do — the VersaLink C7100 is the right first serious Xerox. You'll use it for years. It won't be the bottleneck in your office.

Buy or lease a Xerox VersaLink C7100 if: you have 5–50 employees, print a few thousand pages a month, need color sometimes, and want a machine that won't be the reason your office is having a bad day.
Skip it if: you're a 2-person shop (too small), a print-heavy agency (too small), or a regulated enterprise with serious compliance needs (too small).
